Events Group

Events Group....

The Events Task Group had its inaugural meeting on 28 Feb 08 at the Shire Hall and attendees included representatives from MCC, Adventa, Monmouth Festival, Monmouthshire Show, Monmouth Women's Festival, Bridges Community Centre, Platform One, Welcome to Monmouth website and Wye Valley Life.

The 2 stated aims of the Events Group were agreed to be:

- to identify and implement a suitable event that would specifically celebrate Monmouth.

- to co-ordinate events activities within the local area to avoid clashes/dilution of attendance.

It became clear that to implement an event in the next 6 to 18 months would require an enormous amount of cooperation and effort between all interested parties. Given that the communications network between the numerous local interest groups is underdeveloped at present, it was felt that this would not be possible within the time frame.

Discussion then turned to the coordination of local events and activities. It was agreed by all present that a forum in which all local organizers of activities and festivals could come together, share information, experience and best practice would form the nucleus for a wider committee to then organize a "Monmouth" event as proposed.

Of interest to the meeting was the news that Adventa have proposed an event entitled "Festival of Air", an event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Charles Rolls (2010). This event, if approved and funded, could form the focal point for smaller events in the lead-up, all of which could be linked by the same thread of "Festival of Air".

Subsequent meetings will therefore focus on attracting as much interest (and attendance) as possible from all local organizers so that awareness is raised and an organic network is constructed.

The Events Group will meet every two months and the format for the meetings will be as follows:

Introduction

Representatives from interest groups (up to 5) will brief the meeting on their area of interest (5 mins max)
